BRYAN’S STORY
Bryan is a talented endodontist with a thriving practice out of Spanish Fork. He has always enjoyed being active, especially playing tennis. Bryan had undergone a micro discectomy back in February of 2020 to repair a herniated disc. Bryan recovered very nicely and thought that was the end of it. In November of 2021, Bryan was playing tennis and fell while going for the ball. He landed on his tailbone and while it was painful, he didn’t think much of it and kept playing.
Throughout the next three weeks, Bryan’s pain from that fall progressed rapidly. He reached out to a friend of his who was a physical therapist. Through their research and discussion, they came upon artificial disc replacement surgery. Some of Bryan’s neighbors had flown to Germany to have this surgery performed, but Bryan really wanted to find a local surgeon for a consult. The friend said he knew a surgeon in the valley who performed artificial disc replacement surgeries – Dr. John Edwards at Summit Brain and Spine.
Bryan called our office and made an initial appointment. However, throughout the next two days, his pain got much worse. He couldn’t sit, walk or stand. The only comfortable position was lying flat on his back. Bryan and his wife went to the emergency room at Mountain Point Medical Center. An MRI was performed and Dr. Edwards called Bryan that same day. He recommended surgery but told Bryan it would take weeks to schedule the artificial disc replacement because of the logistics with needing multiple surgeons, the right medical equipment, and the operating room time. Dr. Edwards suggested a revision of the original discectomy for the time-being. This already exceeded Bryan’s expectations, but even better news was coming.
Bryan was scheduled for revision surgery the next day and admitted to the hospital. Dr. Edwards called Bryan that evening and said he had the best news ever. A patient who was scheduled the next day for an artificial disc replacement surgery had canceled, but the surgeons were already scheduled, the operating room time was booked, and the medical equipment representative was in town. Everything was ready to go and Bryan could fill that time slot. He couldn’t believe how the stars had aligned for him!
Bryan underwent the surgery and when he woke up, his pain was GONE. All the disabilities that came with his pain were gone. The numbness was gone. Bryan was up and walking the same day as surgery and out of the hospital the next day. Bryan’s recovery was swift and he was back to work within 9 days.
Bryan had heard horror stories of people having similar surgeries and complications, and he felt like Dr. John Edwards and staff took incredible care of him. He also mentioned that Dr. Edwards was really cool to work with, answered all of his questions, and made him feel at ease. Bryan was so happy with his experience that he brought lunch for the entire clinic staff to say thank you. We want to say thank you right back, Bryan!
